The 138th Kentucky Derby lived up to its moniker as the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sport” with a thrilling stretch run and finish. In front of a record crowd at Churchill Downs, it was race favorite Bodemeister breaking first and streaking to the front of the 20-horse pack. He set a blistering pace, forcing speedsters Trinniberg and Hansen to their limit in an attempt to keep up. At the mile marker, Bodemeister’s advantage had widened to an incredible three lengths. Would this be the first wire-to-wire win in Kentucky Derby history?
Sent off with 15-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby, I’ll Have Another had other ideas. Ridden by first-time Derby rider Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another took a line four-wide and began to work away at Bodemeister’s seemingly insurmountable lead. In deep stretch, I’ll Have Another finally reeled in the free-wheeling pacesetter and took over the lead. At the wire, I’ll Have Another crossed first in a time of 2:01.83, 1 ½ lengths ahead of Bodemeister. Dullahan, who had made up good ground after a rough trip, finished third. I’ll Have Another becomes the first horse in history to win from the 19th post position.

I’ll Have Another earned $1,459,600 with his Kentucky Derby victory. He will now head to Baltimore, Md., for the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, which will take place on Saturday, May 19, at Pimlico Race Course.
